If you haven’t already, you can get your own free copy of NL-SIM and MML.

Part 2 can be found here.

In this first exercise, you will learn how to:

  • Load an existing control panel
  • Use the control panel to run an existing model

To begin with, double click the Demo Disk shortcut.
This is found in the Start Menu => Programs under “NL-SIM and MML”.

Note: If when you first start up NL-SIM you get an error “__MMLLIB.CHN File not found”
this is because you need write privileges in the nlsim folder.
This can be solved by running as an Administrator, and then restarting NL-SIM.

  1. Click on Display in the menu bar
  2. then click on Load Contol Panel

You will see the Library Chain window appear which allows you to select the specific Control Panel you want.

  1. Click on SECOND, the name given to the control panel of a second order model in the library
  2. then click on OK, the Panel below will appear:
    second
  3. Click on the LOAD button on the Panel
  4. To start the model, click on the RUN button. The response of the damped second-order system being driven by a square wave will begin to run. You will see the output waveform of this system appear on the Scope time plot window, as shown below:
